Leadership Reset Formula

Most leadership teams do not lose September. They lose it in July and August and do not notice until the busiest quarter of the year is already underway.

Global employee engagement just hit its lowest point in two years, and the accountability gaps that formed quietly over a slow summer show up loudest the moment Q4 pressure begins.

Here is the four-week formula Axiom Coaching uses to reset clarity, accountability, and momentum before that pressure makes the reset far more expensive.

Why does September expose problems that summer created?

According to Gallup's 2026 State of the Global Workplace report, global employee engagement fell to 20 percent in 2025, the lowest level since 2020 and the first back-to-back annual decline the organization has ever recorded.

Manager engagement dropped even faster, falling nine points since 2022. Because managers drive roughly 70 percent of the variance in team-level engagement, a distracted or disengaged leadership team in August becomes a visibly disengaged company in September.

The reset has to start at the top, not with an all-hands memo about renewed energy.

The September Leadership Reset Formula

Week 1: What actually slipped over the summer?

Before you can reset anything, you need an honest audit, not a vibe check. Look at three things: which priorities quietly slid, which decisions got deferred instead of made, and where meetings got skipped instead of rescheduled. Most leadership teams skip this step because it feels like admitting drift happened. It happened. Naming it is what makes the reset real instead of cosmetic. Then decide what priorities are still viable and must be completed by the end of the year and which ones can be transferred to next year.

Week 2: Who owns what right now?

Summer schedules blur ownership. Someone covered for someone else, a project sat in limbo between two people who each assumed the other had it, and nobody corrected the record when normal schedules resumed. Week two is where you reassign clear, single-owner accountability for every open priority that made the list for the end of the year. Then say it out loud, in front of the team, not in a follow-up email nobody reads.

Week 3: How is information moving again?

If your communication rhythm went quiet over the summer, rebuilding it is not optional. Reinstate the huddles, the one-on-ones, and the all-hands updates on a fixed schedule, not an as-needed basis. Teams recalibrate fastest when the cadence itself becomes predictable again, because predictability is what tells people leadership is paying attention.

Week 4: What gets noticed now that didn't in July?

Recognition is the fastest way to signal that the reset is real. Call out the specific people who kept standards up while others coasted. This is not about a company-wide email thanking everyone equally. It is about naming individual contributions publicly, not just in an email or newsletter, which tells the team that effort during a slow season was seen and matters.

Axiom Perspective

A reset is not a pep talk. It is an audit followed by reassignment, followed by a rhythm, followed by visible recognition. Skip the audit and you are just restating goals nobody currently owns. Skip the recognition and the team never finds out the reset was real. The formula works because it is sequential, not because any single step is clever on its own.

What happens if leadership skips the reset?

The gaps do not stay the same size. They compound. A missed handoff in August becomes a missed deadline in September and a missed target by Q4. Teams that treat the return from summer as a hard reset, not a soft return, consistently outperform teams that assume momentum will rebuild itself.
